Description

This DVD is intended to teach the basics of creating professional-looking parts such as fairings, wheel pants, cowlings, etc. using molds. Presented in a very conversational and hands-on style by our friend Sam James of James Aircraft, one of the most experienced and respected aircraft composite part fabricators in the business, this video will be very useful for nearly anyone who is building an aircraft. While the video uses an RV-4 as an example aircraft, there are very few aircraft designs which don’t require (or which wouldn’t be enhanced by) some kind of fiberglass fairings or parts. There is just a little time spent on the details of more exotic composites such as carbon fiber and Kevlar, as the focus is on the basic techniques for mold-making and how to actually make the parts, although the process is similar to the way that more exotic materials are used. The demonstration includes the basic materials used, the various resins and chemicals, tools and supplies, and the terminology of the process. A demonstration and discussion of hot-wire foam cutting is included as well. Sam even includes a bit of history of composites and some personal anecdotes of how some procedures were developed.
